Braces

Life with Braces

Getting braces doesn’t have to be as overwhelming as it sounds. With modern orthodontic treatments, a supportive team, and the right tips for dental hygiene during braces – the journey is easy. At Beglin Orthodontics – we offer more than your grandparents’ style of braces, and we make sure every patient has a treatment plan created for their specific needs.

What to Expect with Braces

Your life with braces may change slightly – but braces are in no way life altering (only the results are!) Depending on which type of braces you choose, you may need to consider diet changes or be more strict when it comes to brushing and flossing, In general, here are some braces tips for all ages:

What to Eat

You may have more flexibility with clear aligners, but with traditional metal braces or the options listed above, there are some foods to avoid during your treatment. Here are just a few:

  • Chewy foods — bagels, licorice
  • Crunchy foods — popcorn, chips, ice
  • Sticky foods — caramel candies, chewing gum
  • Hard foods — nuts, hard candies
  • Foods that require biting into — corn on the cob, apples, carrots

How to Care for Your Braces

Our team at Beglin Orthodontics are always just a phone call or an appointment away if you need help or have questions about your braces. Once you have your braces, it is important to remember that dental hygiene is priority. Here are the best ways to care for your braces and your teeth underneath:

  • Brush and floss (with a waterpik) after each meal
  • Avoid the foods described above
  • Wear a mouthguard if you are in sports or play hard
  • Wear the bands and retainers as prescribed

What Can Go Wrong with Braces

There isn’t a lot to worry about with your braces, but occasionally, there can be some emergencies that arise. Because traditional braces are metal and have parts that can be pokey or uncomfortable, it is important to tell Dr. Beglin if you are experiencing severe soreness or discomfort. Sometimes, braces can have pieces that break – here are some common orthodontic mishaps:

  • Pokey wires
  • Broken or pokey brackets
  • Loose wires
  • Loose teeth
  • Food getting stuck

If any of these things happen during your treatment, it is important to call our office right away. For pokey wires or brackets, we recommend placing a small piece of wax on the end to protect your cheeks and gums from injury until we can fix them in office.

If food has been stuck and is causing irritation to the gums, there are times when an antiseptic mouthwash is needed. It is important to communicate with our team to ensure you have what you need to take care of your teeth during your treatment.

Traditional metal braces are the tried and true option for many younger patients. They can fix a range of orthodontic problems that range in severity from mild to severe. We recommend these for kids as young as 7.

Patients come first

We had a complicated case with some unknowns along the way. We are so happy with the outcome and results from the 2 years in orthodontia with Dr. Beglin. He is very knowledgeable and we received thorough care, including referral for an oral surgeon. The office has all the modern technology, x-rays, scans, models, etc. Staff are all friendly, helpful and care about their patients. We loved the convenient location in Bishop and always had very quick response when something popped out or went wrong outside of our scheduled appointments. The payment system is great with no interest options, office works with insurance, there are no additional costs, what you pay includes all appointments, including after braces are off and anything that comes up along the way. Highly recommend Dr. Beglin and his staff.

I was treated twice by Dr. Beglin and had a great experience both times. His staff was super friendly and helpful throughout the process. Would definitely recommend!

Everything was explained well and were very good at motivating me to keep rubbber bands and retainer on, overall painless in times where pain could be avoided

Always caring and very patient with others. Love how they do their job. And they would always help out whenever we have an emergency related with braces.

I had braces for 23 months (2 years) and my experience was very good! When I was younger I had braces too, so when I moved here I got them again. All of the people in this facility are amazing and were so kind to me during this whole process!

Everything was really nice over there. They told me I was probably gonna have two years in my braces. I finished in about a year and a half and everything looks great!!!
